From the Winona Daily News, 10/19/2022 Vote to re-elect Chris Meyer as Winona County commissioner. For the past three years, she has brought her serene intelligence, professional experience and reasoned judgment to serve us. We are fortunate to have someone so superbly well qualified to represent not just District 1, but all of Winona County. I grew up in Winona but moved away to pursue an education and career. My wife and I retired and moved back here when Chris was serving her first year as commissioner. We were impressed by her stewardship of the county’s natural and social resources. We have lived for decades in other states that were afflicted by elected municipal representatives who were ideologically inflexible or incompetent — and sometimes both! It was reassuring to find that by our return to Minnesota, we once again were represented by people like Chris who epitomize the ideal of the servant leader. It's not easy to find something new to say about Chris. Here’s one: When the City of Winona’s Heritage Preservation Commission approached the county to jointly celebrate Preservation Month last May by sponsoring an open house at the courthouse, three elected leaders readily stepped up to plan the event — the county attorney, the sheriff and Chris as board chair. She spoke of how important it was for citizens to tour the historic home of our municipal democracy and appreciate anew the care with which our forebears built this edifice to reflect their faith in self-government. Chris embodies that spirit. Let’s return her to office. Michael William Doyle, Winona From the Winona Post, 10/12/2022
I’m a longtime volunteer and previous board member at the Advocacy Center of Winona (ACW). I’ve seen how very important advocacy and support services are for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The ACW helps 600 or more such victims each year. I’m grateful to Winona County for helping the ACW provide these services and to Commissioner Chris Meyer in particular for her support. Her opponent seems to be using an unfortunate mistake made by a single staff person for political purposes and in a way that could ultimately hurt our community. Please vote Chris Meyer for District 1 county commissioner. Susanne Smith, Winona From the Winona Daily News, 10/12/2022 As long term and engaged residents of Winona, we support Chris Meyer in her bid for re-election as District 1 Winona County Commissioner. We believe she will continue to build on her wide experience and bring her well informed broad perspective to issues that come to the attention of the Winona County Board. Since we cannot anticipate what issues the board will confront, we trust Chris will carefully list to all points of view as well as diligently study and bring relevant facts to the discussion. We know her to be a thoughtful conscientious person and feel confident she will consistently exercise her considered judgement in the best interest of Winona County We believe Chris Meyer deserves support for another term. When choosing from candidates for Winona County commissioner, consider their positions on protecting waters and watersheds. I support candidates who care about the welfare of the greatest number of constituents. At the local level, we voters need to be fully caring about every one of our neighbors, if we ourselves are to thrive. Whether by direct or aerial applications of manure, pesticides or herbicides, whatever is done to the land sitting on the county's karst formations is done to the water we ALL rely on. Whether we can drill the deepest well on the ridge, or hope to recreate along a surface water in one of the valleys, or pay for municipal water to our homes, no resident of the county can afford to subsidize any individual's livelihood above everyone else's. If Winona County runs out of safe, clean, fresh water, ALL of us will suffer. I believe Chris Meyer's record proves her concern for ALL county residents, because she understands how vital water is to a vibrant, thriving community. I'm confident her priority will continue to be working for ALL of us, and helping us work together to efficiently and effectively secure fresh water resources throughout the county. Kathie Geiger, Winona From the Winona Daily News, 10/8/2022 I've known Chris Meyer for a decade, and one thing I can tell you is that she cares deeply about our community. As an AmeriCorps Member at Winona County I witnessed Chris volunteer hundreds of hours to teach gardening, and then grow and deliver food from the community garden to the food shelves and free meal programs in Winona and Lewiston with her fellow Master Gardeners. She ran for County Commissioner and serves despite the divisive environment. She cares about access to clean water, healthy food, mental health, and other social services for all residents of the county. During the pandemic she spent hours recruiting others to be part of the Compassionate Covid Campaign. Asking them to record messages about voluntary actions they took to protect themselves and the community from Covid. Please vote for Chris Meyer in the District 1 County Commissioner race because she wants the best for all of us. From the Winona Daily News 10/1/2022 I had the pleasure of voting for Chris Meyer in 2018 and have followed her work on the County Board these past nearly four years. Her Minnesota values show front and center when making well informed decisions on behalf of county residents. She is keen to follow the rule of law, not just state and federal law, but also county policies and procedures. She has maintained her steadfastness in procedure and facts despite an onslaught of personal attacks from fellow commissioners and extreme right wing county residents. Winona County is fortunate to have a commissioner who works so hard for its’ residents and one who values the skills and training of county staff. Electing anyone else but Chris Meyer for District 1 would be a great loss for the county and another moral hit to county staff. Vote for Chris early via absentee or on November 8. Julie Ann Quist From the Winona Post, 9/28/2022 I am writing in support of Commissioner Chris Meyer who is running for reelection. As a longtime observer and photographer of the natural world, I appreciate her concern and work regarding the natural resources and environment of Winona County. She has supported the Winona-Mississippi-La Crescent watershed planning and has worked to protect both ground and surface waters by supporting the animal unit cap. She’s been a strong supporter of the Soil and Water Conservation District and their work. On the Planning Commission, she voted to protect Winona County from frac sand mining and its detrimental effects. I hope you will join me in voting for Commissioner Meyer and support her efforts on behalf of this amazing area where we live. Kay Shaw, Winona From the Winona Daily News 9/25/2022 We’ve known Chris Meyer for many years; she is first and foremost a true listener. Chris listens to all voices with respect and consideration, and is dedicated to servant leadership. She studies the information and facts surrounding issues impacting Winona County. Chris actively practices true collaboration with other county-wide organizations and looks for opportunities to better the lives of its citizens. One issue important to us is affordable housing; Chris has worked tirelessly on this. In 2021 she voted to supplement the rural housing authority budget from CARES act funds, and in 2022 voted for more support for the organization. Chris also voted to apply ARPA funds toward a much-needed supportive housing project in Winona County. Citizen access to county services and new opportunities are incredibly important to her. In Chris Meyer we have a smart, good-hearted, honest, and hardworking public servant who is good for Winona County. We ask you to support her re-election and vote for her in the upcoming county commissioner race. Kathy and Greg Peterson, Winona From the Winona Post 9/14/2022
Trust is what this next election is all about. Who do you trust to carry the burden for you and your philosophy, and who will treat that trust with great personal responsibility? I can say this about Chris Meyer. I trust her and know her. She has taken on the burden of making sure practical Minnesota values are involved in decision making, not the least of which is how our county’s soil and water are used. Small farms pay a heavy price for large farm expansion, and keeping small farmers in business is good economic sense. Winona County is now known as the puppy mill center of Minnesota. Chris will consider the inhumane treatment of dogs, while considering ordinances that limit their expansion and the few who benefit from their operation. As for the issue of recycling, I was rummaging in my basement the other day and found an old “Elect Chris Meyer” sign. I immediately installed it in my window. Problem solved. Just put your sign in your basement so you can reuse it for the next time. Chris will do what’s best for the common good, not just for a few special interests. Vote for Chris; I will. It’s a breath of fresh air when you have an elected official that is trustworthy, full of integrity, and represents your values and concerns, and Chris Meyer (Winona County Commissioner, District 1) is just such a person. Whenever I have engaged Chris on issues ranging from COVID, the new county jail, or the recent Rush Creek fish kill, she listens deeply before responding and demonstrates a full and nuanced understanding of the issues and relevant systems. It is apparent from these conversations that she is not only well-informed and insightful, but she also greatly cares for Winona County and all its constituents: the staff who run the day-to-day operations, the businesses that power our local economy, the farmers who face such mounting challenges, and the citizens who long for a thriving life and healthy environment. Chris has led with compassion from the County Board these past several years and will continue to do so if re-elected. She has my wholehearted support, and I hope you will join me in re-electing Chris Meyer as the District 1 Winona County Commissioner this November. Silas Bergen, Winona |
